Learning and Unlearning
Beginner’s Mind.
Over the last 10 years, I have been on a journey. This has been a journey of learning and unlearning all the things. The things I thought I knew. The beliefs I held on to so strongly no one would be able to change my mind. The plans I created that never seemed to go the way I intended.
This journey has taught me that the only guarantee is this exact moment. Life is the journey and the choice is how we choose to engage in it. Do we hold on tight to the beliefs and ideas that no longer serve us? Do we create plan after plan only to be disappointed when it doesn’t turn out the way we expected? Or do we embrace each and every moment as it is, in whatever shape, size, or form it is.
I’ve learned to embrace a beginner’s mind. This idea from Zen Buddhism that refers to having an attitude of openness, eagerness, and lack of preconceptions. Even with multiple degrees, and a PhD in life, this life journey continues to provide lessons and opportunities to learn and unlearn.
Regardless of what level you enter your studies, even if it is at an advanced level, imagine what could happen if you entered without expectations, with an open mind, and with a willingness to embrace whatever lies ahead, just as a beginner would.
